From France to the US and back: LL Garamond Corporate is a fake-revival of a fake-revival.

The pivotal point of reference, of course, is Tony Stan’s notorious ITC Garamond Condensed (1977), an often violently dismissed misinterpretation of the Garamond style which featured entirely new proportions, a very large x-height, rounded serifs and rather vulgar detailing – a stylistic provocation to any classically trained typographer familiar with the history of type. Nevertheless, it was famously adopted by Apple as their corporate typeface in 1984, and so came to represent the emerging Silicon Valley tech/pop culture right through to the early 2000s.

Anatole Couteau adds another twist to the ‘wrong Garamond’ by further condensing the letterforms and rendering them in four carefully chosen weights. Reduced contrast, altered rhythm, an exacting drawing, straightened shapes and a comprehensive, contemporary glyph set infuse the typeface with entirely new qualities. LL Garamond Corporate is now highly suitable for a wide variety of uses, taking this infamous design icon to the next level.
