Weichi He
(*1991) received a BA from Pontifical University of Chile (PUC) in 2013. He subsequently assisted at PUC and established an independent graphic design practice in Santiago. From 2018 to 2020, he completed the MA in Type Design at Ecole cantonale d'Art de Lausanne/ECAL. He released Max Fett at ECAL Typefaces in 2020.
Weichi first interned at Lineto in the summer of 2020, elaborating a contemporary interpretation of Nico Schweizer’s LL Hoboken High, a classic in the varsity type genre. After returning to Lineto in early 2021, Weichi worked on the re-evaluation and expansion of three more in-house typefaces: He developed new and variable approaches to the crudely pixelated LL Moonbase and the Swiss ‘Bodenschrift’ LL Pirelli (both 2021), as well as contributing the ‘Fill’ style to the playfully modular LL Tabletten (2022).
In September 2021, Weichi was awarded a Swiss Design Award for Photonic, his MA diploma project at ECAL. This variable typeface reinterprets and expands Oswald Cooper’s outstanding Cooper Black (1922). It is currently in production, with a preview available at Linetomorrow. Meanwhile, Weichi's varsity project grew into a full family of eight styles, released as LL Champion in early 2024.
