Stephan Müller

Stephan Müller

A graduate of Lucerne School of Art and Design, Stephan Müller (*1965) founded Lineto with Cornel Windlin in 1993, as a joint label for their individual type design activities. He drew many of the early Lineto fonts, often based on found templates or applications.

In 1997, Stephan settled in Berlin, where he made a name for himself with the catalogue for the first Berlin Biennale (1998), in collaboration with M/M(Paris). When Lineto turned into a digital platform in 1998, Stephan came up with the radical concept for its first website. Subsequently, he drew four styles of LL Numberplate (1998–2003) and released LL Office (1999), LL Freundschaft (2001), LL Valentine (2002), LL Excellent (2004) and others.

In addition to designing a wide range of art publications, Stephan served as a visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig from 2006 to 2008. He was appointed full professor for type design in 2011. In 2014, he co-founded Alphabet, a Berlin-based font engineering company, with Cornel Windlin and Andreas Eigendorf.

In 2018, Stephan launched Forgotten Shapes, the Leipzig-based digital type foundry dedicated to historical reconstructions. On FoSh, he released his digital recreation of Gerstner Programm (2008), as well as Neue Moderne Grotesk and Normal Grotesk (both 2020). His meticulous re-issue of the Bauer Foundry’s extensive Folio family is scheduled for release at the end of 2024.
