Chiachi Chao
(*1988) is a type designer at Lineto with a special focus on multi-script type projects. After receiving a BFA in Communication Design from Shih-chien University in Taipei in 2013, he worked as an independent graphic designer in Taipei and as a systems designer at an international tech company. From 2019 to 2021, he completed the MA program in Type Design at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne.
Chiachi’s first typeface release at Lineto was the complete redraw of LL Le Corbusier, a family of four stencil fonts re-launched in spring 2024. His encompassing LL Kleisch family with three static styles and a variable version was published later in 2024, after winning one of the coveted Swiss Design Awards in 2023. The quasi-Baroque letterforms of LL Kleisch are designed to match various CJK Ming typefaces in a number of features as well as visual parameters, reversing the usual process in Western type design that tries to fit other scripts to the presumed ‘templates’ of the Latin alphabet.
