Anatole Couteau

(*1997) holds a BA in graphic design from École des Métiers d’arts et du Design Auguste Renoir (2017) and an MA in typographic design from ESAIG Estienne (2019), in Paris. In his MA thesis Emoji as Typography, Anatole explored the relationship between ideogrammatic languages and typographic design, creating several fonts with unusual emoji shapes, later published in Pablo Desportes’s Revue Tintamarre.

In March 2020, Anatole joined Lineto as a staff designer. In consultation with Hans-Christian Pulver, and based on Arve Båtevik’s digital interpretation of Emil Ruder’s Plakatschrift, he expanded on the project with a variable version as well as a Maxi version of LL Ruder Plakat (2022). He contributed to the remake of LL Tablettenschrift as part of the Lineto 1.0 project with Céline Odermatt, Weichi He and Laurent Benner.

In close collaboration with NORM, Anatole has been expanding their acclaimed LL Riforma family to an elaborate variable font, offering optical sizing, grading, and a subtle width axis to make the typeface more space-efficient in text settings.
