plant-based but also some fish and dairy, that are thought to be nutritionally dense and thus good for one’s health. Blueberries, salmon, kale and acai are just a few examples of foods that have garnered the “superfood” label. However, there are no set criteria for determining what is and what is not a superfood, according to the American Heart Association. “Superfoods don’t have their own food group,” said Despina Hyde, a registered dietician with the weight management program at New York University’s Langone Medical Center. “As a dietician, I think ‘superfood’ is more of a marketing term for foods that have health benefits.” Superfoods contain a variety of nutrients, such as antioxidants, which are thought to ward off cancer. They also have healthy fats, thought to prevent heart disease; fiber, thought to prevent diabetes and digestive problems; and phytochemicals — the chemicals in plants responsible for deep colors and smells, which can have numerous health benefits. Consuming foods that are packed with nutrients (as many so-called superfoods are) is certainly a good idea, Hyde told Live Science. But the key to a healthy diet is to consume a variety of nutritious foods in the right quantities, she added. Blueberries often top many lists of superfoods because they are rich in vitamins, soluble fiber and phytochemicals. But the same nutrients found in blueberries are also found in many other kinds of berries, including strawberries and cranberries. A study published in 2013 in the journal Circulation found that a high intake of phytochemicals known as flavonoids — which are found in blueberries as well as other kinds of berries — may reduce the risk of certain heart conditions in young women. But the small, vibrant berry may take the top spot purely because it has been more frequently studied, experimental psychologist Barbara Shukitt-Hale told The Atlantic.

Kale lives up to the hype it has attracted as a superfood, but so do most dark, leafy greens: Swiss chard, collards, mustards (including radish greens), spinach (and others in the amaranth family) and cabbages. Include broccoli on that list as well. It’s in the cabbage-mustard family; the modern version is grown for its flower instead of its leaves. These dark vegetables are loaded with vitamins A, C and K, as well as fiber, calcium and other minerals.

Sweet potatoes and squash also usually make the superfood list, for reasons similar to those listed for leafy greens. Both kinds of food are generally excellent sources of fiber, vitamin A and much more. They are also naturally sweet and don’t require the butter, cream or salt typically added to potatoes.

Beans and whole grains are also included on superfood lists. Beans are a source of low-fat protein. These nuggets of nutirtion contain insoluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol; soluble fiber, which provides a longer feeling of fullness; and loads of vitamins and trace minerals largely absent in the typical American diet, such as manganese. Whole grains — named as such because, unlike refined grains, they are not stripped of their nutrient-containing bran and germinating part during processing — have benefits similar to those found in beans, though they don’t contain as much protein. Quinoa is not a grain, but it cooks up like one, and is also a remarkable source of protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants.

Nuts and seeds contain high levels of minerals and healthy fats. Although these are common additions on superfood lists, the downside is that they are high in calories. A quick handful of nuts could contain more than 100 calories, according to Hyde. Shelled nuts and seeds, in this regard, are ideal because they take time to crack open, which slows you down.

Salmon, sardines, mackerel and certain other fatty fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are thought to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. The benefits of eating fish may far outweigh the risk of harming your health from the mercury these fish contain, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. If you worry about the contaminants your fish dinner may contain, avoid eating fish that are high up on the food chain. Certain fish, such as sharks, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish, contain higher levels of mercury than smaller fish, like sardines, smelt and anchovies.

Any superfood list is sure to contain an “exotic fruit of the year.” This might be açaí berry, noni fruit, dragon fruit, rambutan or pomegranate. These fruits might be healthful, but scientific studies don’t show that they are more healthful than other, less exotic (and therefore less expensive) fruits, such as blueberries. Some of these fruits may be particularly dense in certain kinds of nutrients. Pomegranate, for example, contains ellagitannins (ellagic acid), which may have anti-cancer properties. But red raspberries, which are arguably just as delicious as pomegranate seeds, also contain ellagic acid.

Scientists claim that use of the term “superfood” is largely a marketing tool, with no root in academic research. Still, manufacturers rely heavily on marketing ploys and lobbyists to shape the public’s perception of their products.

In an attempt to sway public opinion about the health benefits of macadamia nuts, for example, Royal Hawaiian Macadamia Nut — the world’s largest purveyor of Hawaii’s coveted crop — lobbied the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make a claim linking the consumption of macadamia nuts to a reduced risk of coronary heart disease. The FDA responded by releasing a carefully worded statement noting that consuming 1.5 ounces of macadamia nuts per day as part of a low-fat and low-cholesterol diet could potentially “reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” It wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement, but the macadamia nut industry took that to the press and consumers went, well, nuts.

Another general criticism of the use of the term “superfood” is that, while the food itself might be healthful, the processing might not be. For example, when green tea is freshly brewed, it has several antioxidants. Commercially manufactured bottled green teas, however, are often cut with inferior teas and brewed with copious amounts of sugar. Many kinds of “super-juices” squeezed from açaí berry, noni fruit and pomegranate can also include large amounts of added sugar.

Similarly, whole grains are often processed so that they’re more palatable, but it makes them less healthful. For example, instant whole-grain oats are as unhealthy as overly processed white bread, in that they quickly spike sugar levels in the bloodstream once consumed, promoting insulin resistance, obesity and diabetes, Dr. David Ludwig told NPR.

Because the term “superfood” is not scientific, it can mislead consumers, prompting them to eat one kind of food over another. Instead, Hyde said she encourages her clients, many of whom are trying to lose weight, to eat everything in moderation. “When we label these foods as super and healthy, people think they can eat them in unlimited quantities,” she said. “But you do have to be cautious of the amount you eat, because you can gain weight from eating too much healthy food.”

Research has shown that the ideal diet is one that is largely plant-based, with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthful animal products. Superfoods might be a good entry into healthy eating, and understanding the nutritional value of the food you eat can be enlightening, but there are lots of healthy foods out there to explore, even if no one is calling them “super.”","If you believe the phrase you are what you think, then life truly stems from your thoughts. But we cannot rely purely on thoughts; we must translate thoughts into words and eventually into actions in order to manifest our intentions. This means we have to be very careful with our words, choosing to speak only those which work towards our benefit and cultivate our highest good. Affirmations help purify our thoughts and restructure the dynamic of our brains so that we truly begin to think nothing is impossible. The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, originally meaning “to make steady, strengthen.” Affirmations do indeed strengthen us by helping us believe in the potential of an action we desire to manifest. When we verbally affirm our dreams and ambitions, we are instantly empowered with a deep sense of reassurance that our wishful words will become reality. Affirmations are proven methods of self-improvement because of their ability to rewire our brains. Much like exercise, they raise the level of feel-good hormones and push our brains to form new clusters of “positive thought” neurons. In the sequence of thought-speech-action, affirmations play an integral role by breaking patterns of negative thoughts, negative speech, and, in turn, negative actions. The art of the spoken word is critical in crafting our futures. As a teacher of spirituality, it is my firm belief that we influence the universe word by word. If we dictate to it our wishes, it will respond. When we utter a sound, we emit a sound wave into the universe. This sound wave pierces through the air and becomes a real object. It therefore exists in our world, intangible and invisible. No words are empty words, as every syllable we speak engages energy towards or against us. If you constantly say “I can’t,” the energy of your words will repel the universal force against you. But if you say “I can!” the universe will endow you with the abilities to do just that. So speak away; relinquish your fears and purge your anger, predict your own future and live up to your potential with the 35 affirmations that will change your life. You can utilize any of these affirmations alone or create your own unique combination based on your personal wishes and needs. What is most important is to establish a profound communication with the universe - so say it with conviction, say it in your own unique voice, and make it happen in the real world. Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeat them often, and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes. You might consider affirmations to be unrealistic “wishful thinking.” But try looking at positive affirmations this way: many of us do repetitive exercises to improve our physical health, and affirmations are like exercises for our mind and outlook. These positive mental repetitions can reprogram our thinking patterns so that, over time, we begin to think – and act – differently. For example, evidence suggests that affirmations can help you to perform better at work. According to researchers, spending just a few minutes thinking about your best qualities before a high-pressure meeting – a performance review, for example – can calm your nerves, increase your confidence, and improve your chances of a successful outcome. Self-affirmation may also help to mitigate the effects of stress. In one study, a short affirmation exercise boosted the problem-solving abilities of “chronically stressed” subjects to the same level as those with low stress. What’s more, affirmations have been used to successfully treat people with low self-esteem, depression, and other mental health conditions. And they have been shown to stimulate the areas in our brains that make us more likely to effect positive changes in regard to our health. This latter study suggests that a stronger sense of self-worth makes you more likely to improve your own well-being. So, for example, if you’re worried that you eat too much and don’t get enough exercise , using affirmations to remind yourself of your values can spur you on to change your behavior. Which sounds like something that’s nice to have, right? And so it is. Power over others is an illusion, but power over yourself, your circumstances, your life and your life experience – that’s a definite plus. The Truth The thing is, though, that you already have that power. Odds are, however, that you’re not aware of it, because most people aren’t. Which is why The single most important thing in personal empowerment is the truth. Realizing the truth of how things really are, making this truth YOUR truth, and living your life accordingly – that’s empowerment! Empowerment and the Truth This makes things incredibly simple: If you know and live the truth you’re empowered. If you do not know and live the truth you’re disempowered. Which also means: If you’re feeling disempowered, it’s because you do not know and/or live the truth. It does NOT mean, however, that everybody who is feeling empowered knows and lives the truth. It’s quite possible to feel and/or believe that you’re empowered without actually being empowered (the obvious example being power mongers). Just like it’s possible – and extremely common – to feel disempowered without actually being disempowered. Are you still with me? Obviously, the next question must be The Truth about What, Exactly? So. Which truth are we talking about here? Well Personal empowerment stems from knowing – and living – the truth about you and the truth about other people, the world, life, the universe and everything. (Yeah, just that. That’s all we’re talking about). Or, to put that differently: The truth of how things really are. Or, to put that in a further, different way: The truth about reality. The truth that IS reality. (We’ll get back to what, exactly, that truth is in just a moment; for now I’d just like to make clear how simple things are). If you know and live this truth, you’re empowered, and if you don’t, you’re not. In fact, it’s not an either-or proposition, it’s more like a scale or a stairway: the more you realize and live the truth of that-which-is, the more empowered you’re going to be. It doesn’t get much simpler than that All it takes is for you to establish what the truth about you and life actually is. (Which you can totally do!). And then live that truth (which is a challenge, but also absolutely doable). And you don’t have to do it all at once; baby steps are fine, too. Power Over Others Is an Illusion Remember how, in the second paragraph of this article, I said that power over others is an illusion? Since there is such a thing as power mongers, and worse since these power mongers typically use fear, intimidation and even physical and psychological violence to gain more power, perhaps we should address that here, while we’re talking about the truth. Well, the somewhat challenging truth is that power mongers are weak and scared and trying to make up for that by chasing a red herring (power), and they have no power over you. Unless you play along. No, really, this is the truth. Nobody can ever put you down, order you around or intimidate you without your permission and cooperation. They NEED you to play along. If you do not, power mongers have no power over you. Why? Because we all have free will. No-one can make you be or do anything, ever. Unless you consent. Ultimately, in a worst case scenario, a power monger may torture and kill you and everyone you know, but they cannot make you do as they want unless you agree to do so. And you most emphatically do not have to agree. Definition of Empowerment So, here’s my definition of personal empowerment: Personal empowerment = knowing and living the truth – about you and about life. A Strange Take on Empowerment? Now, I realize this is a somewhat unusual take on the subject of empowerment. and many other such expressions. Big, fat books have been (and are still being) written on the subject. Which is all well and good, but (to repeat) my take is a lot simpler: Personal empowerment = knowing and living the truth – about you and about life. All of the nice and interesting things from the list above – like for example autonomy, responsibility, control, power, strength and quality of life are actually INCLUDED in my definition Because those are the things that you experience when you know and live the truth about yourself and life. In fact, those are the things that ARE ALREADY SO, right now, for all of us. Only we don’t know that, and so we don’t believe it, live it or experience it. And so those nice things – or some of them – aren’t manifest in our lives; perhaps they do not even seem real to us. Isn’t it time to change that? Knowing – and Living – the Truth about You Realizing and living the truth about yourself plus life, the universe and everything probably seems like a tall order, right? Well, my suggestion would be to just start with what’s at hand: yourself. You might start by looking into authenticity and being authentic. Authenticity is all about you – knowing who you are, and being yourself. The interesting thing is, that once you realize the truth about who you really are, you’ve simultaneously realized the truth about life, the universe and everything. Why? Because ultimately there is no difference – you and everything else is one and the same. You can call that one all-encompassing thing whatever you like. I like to call it consciousness. Everything, including you, me and the universe, is consciousness. The way I see it, you can realize the truth of this in one of (at least) two ways: A) The hard (and confusing) way which is studying theoretical physics, particularly quantum field theory and quantum mechanics in general. And then relating all of that to yourself, life and everything. B) The easy and simple way which is going on inner journeys in consciousness with the explicit purpose of realizing the truth about yourself and life. Provided you’ve gotten reasonably clear of old traumas and don’t hold too many limiting beliefs, you will surely find all the answers you’re looking for on inner journeys. Alternatively (or additionally) you can also realize the truth by doing wholesale letting go – meaning that in a single session you (temporarily) let go of absolutely everything you possibly can – your thoughts, your feelings, your needs, your beliefs, even your physical body and everything else, too – and then see what happens. What happens is, of course, that once you’ve let go of absolutely everything that can be let go, what’s left is the truth. Reality. That-which-is. Who you really are. Which is consciousness. Your choice. Okay, So What IS the Truth about Us and Life? Again, simple, and you’ve already read it here several times: Both you, I and life, the universe and everything = consciousness. Another couple of words for consciousness are beingness and awareness. And yet another few words for consciousness, beingness and awareness are reality, truth, wholeness, life and that-which-is. Ergo, just so we’re clear, here: Consciousness = beingness = awareness = (absolute) reality = truth = wholeness = oneness = life = that-which-is = the whole shebang. (And all of that probably = the quantum field). This is big, I know. It’s as big as it gets. Which is okay, because we’re going to break it down into smaller bits in just a moment. Who Is Powerful? All of Us! The fact that we are all consciousness means, of course, that we are all one, but it also means that you are the universe, you are life. (That’s a pretty powerful thing to be, in fact, it’s as powerful as it gets). This does not mean that you get to lord it over everyone else, because everyone else is the same as you – equally powerful.","We’re at the strangest place culturally when it comes to sleep. We’ve never been so obsessed: We buy smartwatches and Oura rings to track our sleep quality relentlessly every night; we pony up for the latest, greatest, smartest mattress; we gobble sleep tonics, CBD (and yes, Ambien and Xanax) and “sleep ice cream”; we pay to crawl into nap pods; and we travel far just to bed down at sleep retreats. The wellness world and Silicon Valley have unleashed every device and solution seemingly imaginable, from sleep robots that cuddle us and control our breathing to pricey sleep supplement subscription plans. We have made complex sleep shrines of our (now often desexualized) bedrooms, banishing our partners through “sleep divorces.” This has created an entire “sleep economy” set to reach $585 billion by 2024. Sleep has suddenly become such an over-the-top wellness trend that the media has begun mocking our agonizing over it, noting the rise of orthosomnia, a condition where anxiety over sleep tracking causes sleep problems. When, in human history, have we ached so much for sleep and unconsciousness? Why, with an avalanche of sleep solutions and a newly sleep-obsessed culture, do we remain in a sleepless epidemic, with around one in three of us sleeping badly and one in 10 having regular insomnia? The reason is that most of these generic sleep solutions, and our modern lives, defy the basic facts of circadian biology. Humans evolved to be highly sensitive to the 24-hour solar cycle and super-regular exposure to natural light and dark. Nearly all organisms, including humans, have internal daily clocks (circadian rhythms) that control almost every biological system in our bodies, from our sleep-wake cycles and mood and performance patterns to our metabolic, immune and reproductive systems. The bedrock of circadian science is that exposure to regular light-dark cycles provides the daily “time cues” needed to reset our circadian clocks every single day, and not only determines how well we sleep but our very cellular health. We need the sun’s bright blue light in the day to be alert and active, and we need dark to kick-start our brain’s sleep mode and recovery. Humans today, however, have never been exposed to so much disruption to their circadian rhythms, such as the glaring disconnect between natural solar time and our social “clocks.” We’re taking in light and dark in historically whacked-out, unnatural ways. We blast our eyes after dusk with blue-enriched light from ever-brighter, addictive screens, tricking our brains into thinking it’s still daytime: Netflix binging, checking social media until we pass out. Work increasingly doesn’t conform to solar time. While 20 percent of people are nightshift workers, reversing their day-night behavior, gig work is also soaring: Fifty percent of the world’s workforce works remotely at least half the week, part of the creeping “always-on” work culture that encourages us to further disconnect from natural cycles. We have a shrinking global world: more airline travel so more circadian disruptions such as jet lag and global conference calls at all hours of the night. Ours is a 24/7 culture (from gyms to supermarkets); light pollution increasingly floods our skies at night; and we’re tied to desks, deprived of natural sunlight in the day. Never before have human environments been such a “lightmare.” As Dr. Steven Lockley, associate professor of medicine at Harvard and one of the world’s top experts on circadian rhythms and sleep, puts it: “The absolute key to healthy sleep and circadian rhythms is stable, regularly-timed daily light and dark exposure—our natural daily time cues. Sleep negates light input to the brain, and so keeping a regular sleep pattern will also help maintain regular light-dark exposure. After dusk, when natural light disappears, we must minimize the negative impact of man-made light. In the day, we have evolved to be in the light, ideally sunlight, but if not, high-quality blue-enriched indoor light. Period. Given that most of our body systems express circadian rhythms, ensuring proper alignment of our internal circadian clocks, starting with the management of lighting, will have major impacts on human health.” While we’ve been obsessed with sleep, and trying to get more of it with smart pillows and tonics, it’s the timing of sleep that is absolutely key to getting high-quality, restorative sleep. This means sleeping at the right circadian time, and the only solutions that can actually reset circadian rhythms have LIGHT at the center of them. So, we predict a major shift in wellness: less focus on all the generic sleep solutions and a keen new focus on circadian health optimization for not only sleep but for all the brain and body systems that are controlled by the circadian clock. It means that the TIMING of biology will become something we need to measure and manage, and light will be a central part of any solution. We’re at the strangest place culturally when it comes to sleep. While 20 percent of people are nightshift workers, reversing their day-night behavior, gig work is also soaring: Fifty percent of the world’s workforce works remotely at least half the week, part of the creeping “always-on” work culture that encourages us to further disconnect from natural cycles.","In their young age, all people possess the ability of spontaneity and fluidity of their minds and bodies. Their energy and capacity to retain knowledge are great, but unfortunately this state of functioning does not last forever. After some time, not so much due to physical deterioration as due to mental limitations originating in our endless prejudices and wrong beliefs, these abilities start to diminish. Our human bodies are extraordinarily susceptible to what our minds suggest. Programming our consciousness by using wrong mental and emotional messages could prove disastrous to our general health. Frequent unconscious reactions of anger, fear, guilt and insecurity bring our body to a state of physical disbalance and produce energy blockages. Crystal therapy is an ancient art of accommodating crystals, minerals and semiprecious stones directly on or around our body, aiming at reaching a state of deep relaxation, emotional stress release, emotional pain release, balancing the physical body and all the other invisible subtle bodies. If you are interested to read a short essay about the possibilities of treating neurosis with crystal therapy you can check out my new article about Crystal healing therapy: neurosis. During the process of crystal therapy one can use individual crystals, but more often one deals with specific crystal patterns. These crystal patters can be produced in various geometrical shapes. It is believed that specific geometrical shapes are capable of creating specific light tubes, by means of which our body is able to open itself toward the multidimensional realms of reality. During the crystal therapy, individual crystals can be placed directly on the area of pain, on the specific meridians, acupressure points, and on the energy centers - chakras. A delicate combination of sound, light and color is also one of the possibilities to be used in parallel with the selected crystals for crystal healing. In the case where one works with individual crystals, it is necessary to firstly locate the problem and thus the specific energy center in charge of the problem. Selected crystals for that particular energy center (chakra) can afterwards be used for a time period between 5 and 25 minutes. If there comes a feeling of unease during the treatment, the crystal therapy should be interrupted and the selected crystals should be replaced by a transparent rock crystal. Out of all stones the crystals of choice to be used in crystal healing and therapy are quartz, i.e., rock crystal, amethyst, rose quartz, tourmaline, kunzite, and hiddenite. Neither a revival nor a redesign, it reframes the concept famously underlying Renner’s modernist uber classic: that a distinctive, fully functional yet sophisticated typeface could be constructed purely out of straight lines and circular curves. How, then, would this be best approached with today’s digital means, almost a century later?

Lineto’s first encounter with the Futura legacy dates to 2004, when Cornel Windlin was commissioned to art direct the catalogues and communication for Vitra’s newly-established Home Collection. Vitra had been using Futura since the early 1980s, and while Cornel proposed to stick with it, he had trouble finding a suitable digital version.

Some were based on dubious phototypesetting sources, others focused too narrowly on reproducing metal types, replicating characteristic details resulting from the limitations of long-gone technologies. Aiming at a tougher, crisper and more geometric rendering of Futura, Cornel first worked with Laurenz Brunner on a single Medium cut. This proved successful, and in the years to follow, it was developed into a range of five weights called VFutura.

Ten years later, Arve Båtevik joined Lineto as a staff designer and was tasked with overhauling the five cuts of VFutura, in order to finally create matching italic cuts. However, upon examination, Arve proposed to entirely redraw the roman weights instead. This time, no particular version of Futura would serve as a starting point. Renner’s concept rather than its interpretation would serve as a guideline, so that everything would be geometrically constructed from scratch: Futura as it should have been.

The project required a thorough understanding of Renner’s principles of construction, his method for optical corrections, and his aesthetic preferences. After comparing original drawings with earlier drafts from 1925, and with the metal types in Light, Medium and Bold crafted by the punchcutters at Bauer in 1927, Arve defined the curves for individual groups of letters, fine-tuned the joins, and found distinctive solutions for the many formal problems across each weight.

Working against the current tendency of interpolating entire families, each cut of LL Supreme was drawn separately and, as a consequence, has its own identity.
